- This 11+ English Short Course is a comprehensive eight-week curriculum designed to prepare Year 5 students for competitive entrance exams.
- The syllabus systematically covers word classes, morphology, and advanced vocabulary alongside essential literary techniques like inference and subtext. Students are taught the Point–Evidence–Explanation (P-E-E) method to structure high-level comprehension answers and the “Show, Don’t Tell” approach for creative writing.
- Structural tools such as Freytag’s Pyramid help learners organize narrative plots, while specialized weeks focus on idioms, poetry, and rhetoric.
- Each session integrates tutor-led activities with weekly homework assignments, which are individually marked and returned with detailed tutor feedback to reinforce technical accuracy and expressive writing.
- The course culminates in timed exam simulations and strategic proofreading exercises to ensure students can perform effectively under pressure.

Marked homework between sessions
After each session, your child will submit a piece of homework electronically via our homework portal. This will be carefully marked ahead of the following lesson to ensure timely and effective feedback.
Homework tasks will focus on a combination of comprehension and creative writing skills, with all feedback tailored specifically to your child’s individual strengths and areas for development.

The course covers all necessary key skills, including vocabulary, language methods, ‘show don’t tell’, developing descriptions, planning, structure & paragraphing, SPaG, sentence variation and key exam tips.
